Learning for Life and Work

Subject Overview

Learning for Life and Work aims to help pupils develop knowledge and understanding of the challenges and opportunities that they may encounter both inside and out of school. It aims to develop the skills, attitudes and values necessary for independent thinking, informed decision making and responsible actions when faced with personal, social, economic and employment issues.

Key Stage 3 Programmes of Study

In Years 8 – 10 pupils are allocated 2 periods per week on their timetable for LLW classes.

Learning for Life and Work has four subject strands:

  • Employability
  • Local and Global Citizenship
  • Personal Development
  • Home Economics.

It aims to bring closer links between the curriculum and the knowledge, skills and capabilities that are necessary for life and work. It addresses the three main objectives of the curriculum: to develop young people as individuals, as contributors to society, and as contributors to the economy and the environment.

We have welcomed visitors from Young Enterprise, Barclays, Youth Justice and the PSNI.

Key Stage 4 Programme of Study

In Keystage 4, LLW is an optional subject and students study the CCEA specification at GCSE level. Year 11 and 12 pupils are allocated 5 periods per week on their timetable for LLW classes.

The CCEA GCSE Learning for Life and Work specification engages students to explore social, personal, economic and employment issues. Topics include diversity and inclusion, social responsibility, human rights and entrepreneurship. The specification helps students to understand the connections between local, national and global issues. The specification has four units:

  • Unit 1: Local and Global Citizenship
  • Unit 2: Personal Development
  • Unit 3: Employability
  • Unit 4: Controlled Assessment Task.

There are three written exams, each worth 20% of the overall mark, and a Controlled Assessment Task worth 40%.
