Welcome to Breda Academy

Our School Community!

Breda Academy is a vibrant and flourishing school community in its 10th year which continues to grow and build on our enduring achievements and move from strength to strength! It is a vibrant, diverse, and successful all-ability school in South Belfast with 825 students aged 11 to 19 and 95 members of staff. We pride ourselves on being a welcoming, warm, friendly, and caring school where we place a very high value on establishing and nurturing strong positive relationships between students, staff, and parents/carers.

Students are expected to be safe, polite, and ready to learn and develop core values and behaviours such as respect, responsibility, charity, and kindness, as we give these ‘values’ equal importance to attaining academic results. Developing these values will also help our students to be more open minded, tolerant, forgiving, supportive, and caring of each other regardless of gender, background, ethnicity, culture and/or religion.

We take pride in celebrating the many talents and achievements of our students, and in particular reward their effort and positive attitude, and encourage them to learn from their mistakes, as it is our central belief that much can be accomplished through hard work and by not giving up.

In the past eight years, due to the combined hard work and resilience of our students and staff, our examination results have continued to increase significantly. In August 2025, 96% of Year 12 students attained 5 A* - C GCSE/Level 2 grades and in the past 4 Years 96% of 400 Year 12 students have attained 5 A* - C GCSE/Level 2 grades. Also in 2025, 73% of our Year 14 students attained 3 A* to C A Level/Level 3 grades, meaning that in the past 4 Years 70% of 350 Year 14 students have attained 3 A* to C A Level/Level 3 grades.

We continue to expand as a community and in September we welcomed 130 new Year 8 students who are now flourishing and enjoying school life. We are very proud that the Academy offers all students a 7-year learning journey and our 6th Form continues to grow and thrive, and we currently have a record 184 Year 13 and 14 students studying A-Level and Level 3 qualifications and taking advantage of our new study centre with its advanced ICT facilities and a full-time member of staff as their study supervisor.

We place our students at the heart of all we do and provide them with excellent pastoral care to promote their wellbeing, tailored support to meet their needs and high-quality teaching to ensure they make continual progress in each key stage of their learning. The Academy provides an inclusive and diverse curriculum and a wide range of qualifications and enrichment opportunities to develop our students’ education, skills, and resilience to be successful lifelong learners, confident individuals, and responsible citizens.

It is our ambition at Breda Academy that students are ‘Learners Today and Leaders Tomorrow’ and when they leave us, they will go on to be future change makers and take an active role in shaping and making Northern Ireland and the world a better place for us all. To quote John F Kennedy the 35th President of America; “Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.”

Please come and join our community!

🎨 We were delighted to welcome visiting artists Sue Cathcart (Mr. Papers) and Deby McKnight for a fantastic two-day workshop with Miss Davidson’s Year 11 GCSE Art class. Pupils explored papier-mâché, collage and recycled materials, creating imaginative characters while developing ideas for their three-dimensional GCSE project. It was wonderful to see so much creativity, enthusiasm and experimentation throughout the workshop. A huge thank you to Sue and Deby for inspiring our young artists! ♻️✨🎨 #GCSEArt #Year11Art #MrPapers #SueCathcart #DebyMcKnight #PapierMache #CreativeLearning #ArtEducation
Cape Town by Yasmin Today we woke up at 7:30am and made our way to Durbanville Children’s Home. We got to learn about how the children live and what the home offers to make their lives as normal as possible. We then helped out by sorting girls’ clothes, boys’ clothes, shoes, and party bags for the children. After that, we took a break and visited the café at the children’s home for some snacks and drinks, with all proceeds helping to support the home. We made our way back to the house around 12pm for lunch and some downtime before taking a walk along the beach. The water was freezing! We then treated ourselves to soda floats and milkshakes, which were delicious. We headed home for dinner before getting ourselves ready to watch Invictus with some snacks. #proudtobebreda #bredaacademytravels
Queen's University Belfast Junior Academy - update from Year 9 participants On Thursday 21st May four of us in Year 9 attended the Welcome to Queen's University as part of their Junior Academy Programme. We got a guided tour of the University and had fun finding the fossils in the library floor, as well as visiting the CS Lewis room with an opportunity to take pictures of the Narnia door. We enjoyed sitting in an actual lecture theatre, along with visiting the Great Hall, Black and White Hall and seeing many of the beautiful paintings and sculptures around the campus. We had a lovely lunch and afterwards, in The Great Hall, we played team building games, constructing a boat using 2 pieces of paper and 6 pieces of tape in a race against the clock. We then finished the day off by having to complete the plane challenge and were rewarded with goody bags. We are all looking forward to going next year where hopefully we will be doing experiments in a science lab. Thank you Q.U.B. #proudtobebreda
