Admissions Policy

Specialist Provision at Breda Academy (Social and Communication)

A - The student’s priority special educational need, relates to social communication and adaption (including Autism Spectrum Disorder ASD) as indicated on their Statement of Special Educational Needs

B - Recommendation to attend specialist provision (Social and Communication), is stated by an Educational Psychologist on their Statement of Special Educational Needs

C - The student’s score on a standardised test of verbal or nonverbal learning ability is within the range generally catered for within mainstream post-primary classes.

D - Justification has been provided why the student’s needs would not be best met through full-time placement in mainstream post-primary classes, with access to adult assistance and advisory support if necessary.

E - The student is not likely to present within the centre or mainstream classes with, difficulties of behavioural disruption of such severity as to impede his/her own access to the support provided or interfere significantly with the progress of other students.

Enrolment

The number and age distribution of students attending the specialist provision centre will be controlled to ensure viable teaching and social opportunities for all students. The number will be capped at a maximum of 8 students for each key stage class.

Extra Criteria

The continued attendance of students in the centre will be monitored through Annual Review Procedures.

A student will be deemed ready to discontinue attendance in the centre, with possible integration to full time mainstream provision, with adult assistance and advisory support, if necessary, where the school is satisfied that:

A - The student has achieved a reasonable period of successful social and functional integration within mainstream classes and the wider aspects of post-primary school.

B - The student’s academic progress is broadly contiguous with the curriculum provision and academic expectations within Breda Academy.

C - The student will be deemed ready to discontinue attendance in the centre if it has become evident that the student’s priority need no longer relates to social communication and adaption and an alternative form of special educational provision may be required.
