Special Educational Needs and Disability

PROVISION FOR SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND DISABILITY (SEND)

At Breda Academy we take pride in the level of special educational needs (SEN) support that we provide for our students.  We strive to ensure that our students with SEN achieve their full potential.  Breda Academy caters extensively for pupils with special educational needs.  All staff are highly experienced and trained annually in meeting the needs of pupils with various needs, some of which include:

Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD, ADD, Dyscalculia, Sensory Impairments, Medical Needs and Cognitive and Learning Needs.

Support Available:

The following support is available on a 1:1 and small group basis. Literacy, Numeracy, Social Skills, Anger Management, coping with Anxiety, ADHD/ADD NI block of therapy, Excuse Me Pass System, Behavioural Support, use of our sensory hub and break and lunch time clubs.

Dyslexia Friendly Classrooms: all of our classrooms are Dyslexia Friendly, using a range of resources, teaching strategies and classroom organisation methods in order to support students with Dyslexia.

Promoting self-regulation: all of our classrooms are equipped with calm boxes, to enable students to self-regulate and adjust during lessons.

We have a team of 46 teaching assistants who support our students on a day-to-day basis. Our SENCO Mrs Begemann co-ordinates the Special Educational Needs and Disability Support within the school and is supported  by our Assistant SENCO Mrs Leeman.

We have opened three Key Stage 3 social and communication units funded by the Education Authority, that support a maximum of 8 statemented students. These classrooms have been refurbished and include break off sensory rooms.

For further information or advice on SEN, please contact the SENCO.
